Each December we have had a special service to honour the elderly in our community. During this time of celebration, we give gift baskets to each of the elders in attendance and honor them for their life of dedication to their families and communities. On Sunday 13th December 2020, we celebrated our 40th year of this special event, which was held for the first time via ZOOM and FaceBook Live due to Covid-19 restrictions, but was nevertheless still a time of celebration for all in attendance via Social Media. The service was also broadcasted live via Radio Turks and Caicos (RTC). Special recognition this year, was given via slide presentation to the residents of the Sylvia Melhado Elder Care Centre and also to Rev. Catherine Williams-Handfield, Bishop Franklyn Williams (deceased) and Rev. Isabella Williams (deceased) as founders of this special program. Rev. Handfield actively participated in the service by sharing her reflections of planning, preparing for and implementing the first services in the early 1980’s. Hon. Sharlene Robinsion, Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Hon. Charles Washington Missick, Leader of the Opposition and Hon. George Lightbourne, Member of the HOA, also paid their respects to the seniors and brought greetings during the service. Due to the restrictions, the gifts for this year were delivered to the recipients at their various places of residence.
